Babies love to eat! Sometimes, a little too much, and a bunch of it comes right back up. My oldest daughter was a big-time spit-up baby. She’d eat like a champ, go a little overboard, and then—up it would come. I had SO MANY burp cloths. As I type this, I feel like I can smell them. Ugh. I’d go through a stack a day.
Here’s why babies spit up: Their digestive systems are still developing, and the valve between the stomach and the esophagus isn’t fully matured yet. This means milk or formula can easily come back up, especially if they’ve eaten too much or swallowed air during feeding. For some babies, it’s almost inevitable.
But sometimes, a burp cloth isn’t enough. These little babies can spit-up with surprising force, or sometimes you’re not expecting it, and what happens? Your couch or chair takes the hit. A time or two is no big deal, but if you’re dealing with this a lot, I’ve got a solution for you.
A Vommat! Vommats are eco-friendly disposable sheets that I originally designed for parents to use when kids are sick and vomiting. But they can handle any bodily fluid and are perfect for protecting your furniture from spit-up. Many elements that makes Vommats great for vomiting also makes them amazing for spit-up. Here’s what I mean:
- Soft and quiet: sitting or laying on a Vommat will not disturb your comfort (or baby's!)
- Large size: they cover about 16 sq ft so you can save a whole chair of a large section of wherever you're sitting
- No cleanup: Just toss the sheet after it has been used and lay out a fresh one
- Absorbent & watertight: the sheets are highly absorbent (we're talking gallons!) and are totally watertight. The spit-up will not get through to the other side.
- Eco-friendly: Vommats are made of sustainable materials and are biodegradable. There's no plastic!
I wish I had some Vommats to sit on back when I'd feed my first... they weren't around yet because she hadn't yet had her first stomach bug which gave me the idea to pursue Vommat 😂. Hopefully these will help make things easier for new moms both with feeding and then later with vom. Anything to give us a little bit of a break, right?
Also please note that Vommats should not be used for babies without very close adult supervision. The sheets themselves are a suffocation hazard so I am only suggesting use here when a parent or caregiver is present and waiting out the window of possible spit-up.
Anyway let me know if they help! I just had an idea; maybe I could do tiny ones for disposable burp cloths...? I am nuts.
Here's a link to buy and I'm hoping your reflux phase is short-lived, good luck and congrats!!
